Project management is defined as the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. It is often confused with program management, which is defined as a group of related and interdependent projects.  An example of related and interdependent projects is the Apollo Moon Mission.  This “program” was composed of a series of related and interdependent projects whose collective goal was to 1) send a human into outer space, 2) safely land him on the surface of the moon, 3) support the collection of lunar geological samples and 4) safely return the traveler to Earth.

By definition, a project is temporary:  It has a defined beginning and an end, usually limited by date, funding or deliverables.  The motivations for initiating a project vary widely.  However, projects are typically undertaken to meet unique goals and objectives as they relate to the customer's business environment.  The general overriding intent is to 1) bring about beneficial change and / or 2) add value to the organization.

The primary challenge to effective project management is to achieve all of a project's goals and objectives while "managing" key project constraints. Typical constraints are scope (what needs to be done), time (in weeks, months, etc), and budget (sources and amounts). The secondary challenge to project management is to efficiently and effectively allocate and integrate the range of inputs necessary to meet established objectives within the agreed scope, time and budget.

Given the above, What causes a project to fail?

There are multiple reasons why a project might fail or be considered a failure.  The most common reasons are listed below in no order of importance.

  • Poor Communications Between Parties
  • Incomplete / Poorly Defined Requirements
  • Lack of Customer / User Involvement
  • Lack of Resources (Customer and Vendor)
  • Unrealistic Expectations
  • Lack of Executive Support / Project Champion
  • Changing Requirements / Specifications
  • Ineffective Planning / Execution
  • Poor Project Management / Methodology
  • Solution / Fit Alignment
  • Insufficient / Inadequate Funding
